Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is a type of alternative medicine in which hypnosis is used to create a state of focused attention and increased suggestibility during which positive suggestions and guided imagery are used to help individuals deal with a variety of concerns and issues.
Hypnotherapy can be used to treat a number of different ailments:
- Phobias
- Anxiety
- Quitting bad habits
- Relieving stress
- Pain management
Hypnosis originated in the 1800’s when James Braid (a surgeon) expanded on Franz Mesmer’s theory of animal magnetism, a belief that there is an invisible force possessed by all living things in order to achieve a higher level of pain management for his patients during surgeries.
During hypnosis, a person is said to have heightened focus and concentration. Hypnotised subjects are said to show an increased response to suggestions.
Hypnosis usually begins with a hypnotic induction involving a series of preliminary instructions and suggestions. The use of hypnotism for therapeutic purposes is referred to as hypnotherapy.
